New York Cuts Corrections Staff After Strike

Mar 11, 2025 | Government, Law, Security

New York fired over 2,000 prison guards following a strike that began on February 17. Despite the terminations, enough officers returned to declare the strike ended. The walkout, deemed illegal, was not sanctioned by the union. An agreement between the state and union included:

  • Provisions on overtime pay.
  • Suspension of the HALT Act for 90 days, affecting solitary confinement regulations.
  • A 30-day review of staffing and safety conditions.

Officers will continue 12-hour shifts, and the National Guard will support operations while recruitment efforts are underway.
