Taiwan Charges Chinese Captain for Undersea Cable Damage

Apr 11, 2025 | Government, Politics, White House

Taiwan has charged a Chinese captain, identified as Mr. Wang, for damaging an undersea cable in February. This marks Taiwan’s first criminal case over undersea cable sabotage. The Hong Tai 58, a ship operated by Chinese nationals, allegedly dropped anchor and disrupted essential internet infrastructure. Though the captain was uncooperative, Taiwanese authorities held seven other Chinese crew members, who will be repatriated without charges. Taiwan’s digital ministry highlighted rising incidents of cable malfunctions, emphasizing the cables’ crucial role in communications and security across the island.
