NOAA’s Okeanos Explorer conducted six expeditions from May to November 2024, mapping over 251,000 km² of seafloor in the Pacific Islands region. This effort supports marine conservation and scientific research.

  • Mapped Areas: Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument, Johnston Atoll, and Hawaiian EEZ.
  • Objectives: Enhance understanding of deep-sea ecosystems, inform management of protected areas, and contribute to the National Strategy for Mapping the U.S. EEZ.
  • Engagement: Telepresence technology allowed real-time participation from scientists and the public.

Data collected will be publicly available within 90–120 days, fostering further exploration and stewardship of ocean resources.
