Mayor Bass Cuts 400 LAPD Jobs, Proposes Budget Plan

Apr 22, 2025 | Government, International, Politics

Mayor Karen Bass announced the elimination of 400 civilian jobs at the L.A. Police Department in her “State of the City” address. The $14 billion budget for the 2025-26 fiscal year aims to close a nearly $1 billion financial gap, cutting over 2,700 city positions, including about 1,650 layoffs. The budget allocates funds for new hires at the fire department following the destructive Palisades fire. Although police officer numbers continue to decline due to attrition, Bass highlighted the fast recovery process in the Palisades, claiming it to be the fastest in California’s history.
