Mexican president refuses US military intervention against cartels

May 4, 2025 | International, Military, Politics

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum recently rejected President Trump’s proposal to deploy US troops for a crackdown on cartels in Mexico.

During a phone call, Trump offered military assistance to combat the production of fentanyl, a deadly opioid trafficked by Mexican cartels using chemicals from China.

  • Sheinbaum emphasized Mexico’s sovereignty and rejected foreign military presence.
  • The Wall Street Journal reported the call, which Sheinbaum confirmed as accurate but incomplete.

Meanwhile, both countries have deployed troops along the border and agreed to exchange intelligence.

Lucem News Editor’s Opinion: Sheinbaum says “no” to boots on the ground. We have to think this might change during Trump. The drug cartels are in Mexico with tens of billions of US dollars because the Mexican infrastructure and government facilitate that.
