Temporary Protected Status Terminated for Afghan Refugees

On Monday, the Trump administration announced the end of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Afghans in the U.S., citing improved conditions in Afghanistan. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem stated that Afghanistan’s security and economy now allow for refugees to return. Since 2021, after the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, around 76,000 Afghans had settled in the U.S., mainly in Virginia, California, and Texas. U.S. aid to Afghanistan has been approximately $20.71 billion over the past three years. The deportations align with restoring TPS to its intended temporary function.

Lucem News Editor’s Opinion: Should the Afghan refugees taken in by the Biden Administratiohn be sent back to Taliban controlled Afghanistan ? That seems like cruel punishment. Won’t they be executed by the Taliiban for their ties to the US ?
