Energy Secretary Chris Wright is focused on refilling the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR), which was significantly depleted by former President Biden, bringing levels to their lowest since the 1980s. House Republicans proposed $1.54 billion for repairs and oil procurement to restore SPR levels, while also suggesting the cancellation of a planned sale of 7 million barrels for fiscal 2026 and 2027. Wright emphasized the need for replenishment due to national security concerns, estimating it could take 4–6 years. The SPR has been managed by Fluor Federal Petroleum Operations since 2013.

Lucem News Editor’s Opinion: Biden’s economic nightmare caused record inflation. In a political move to try to win more votes during mid-term elections, his administration took almost 200 MILLION barrels out of the nations Strategic Oil Reserve. Some say this damaged the salt mines used to store the oil and they have to be filled up slowly to avoid problems. There should be a law to prevent flagrant political weaponization of US resources for vote buying like that.
