A New Mexico judge, Joel Cano, resigned following the arrest of Cristhian Ortega-Lopez, a suspected member of the Tren de Aragua gang, at his home. Cano resigned on March 3, but his resignation letter only reached the Supreme Court on March 31.
- Investigations by Homeland Security in January led to the discovery of Ortega-Lopez, an illegal Venezuelan immigrant, residing with firearms in a home owned by Cano’s wife, Nancy.
- Four firearms were seized. April Cano, the judge’s daughter, allegedly allowed Ortega-Lopez access to the weapons.
Ortega-Lopez admitted to illegally entering the U.S. in December 2023.
