Putin Rejects Trump’s Peace Appeal, Demands Ukraine’s Demilitarization and Annexation

Apr 29, 2025 | International, Politics, Security

Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has outlined stringent conditions for peace with Ukraine, countering President Trump’s recent peace overtures.

Lavrov’s demands include:

  • Recognition of Crimea, Sevastopol, Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia as Russian territory
  • Ukraine’s permanent neutrality and demilitarization
  • Lifting of all sanctions and return of frozen assets
  • Dropping of international arrest warrants against Putin
  • Legally binding security guarantees for Russia against NATO and EU threats

These conditions suggest a significant divergence from Trump’s proposed peace framework, indicating potential challenges ahead in resolving the conflict.

Lucem News Editor’s Opinion: No surprises there. Putin has said no NATO in Ukraine since 2008. He has also called for the demilitarization of Ukraine for many years. Russia will not stand down because every time they agreed to one in the past, the Ukranians used it to rearm. Ukraine admitted they had no intention ever of honoring the Minsk Agreements even though they said they would when they were signing them. That’s how trustworthy they are and exactly why Russia cannot be duped ito agreeing to that again.
