New Jersey Transit train engineers went on strike, affecting approximately 350,000 commuters in New Jersey and New York City. The strike followed unsuccessful negotiations and is the first in over 40 years, after a recent rejection of a labor agreement by union members. Tom Haas, of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen, expressed frustration over stalled talks. NJ Transit CEO Kris Kolluri and New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy stressed the importance of resuming negotiations to find an equitable solution that balances fairness for employees with affordability for commuters and taxpayers.

Lucem News Editor’s Opinion: Unions are absolutely necessary in the United States. But they sometimes get out of control. This seems like a case of that. The average union member makes supposedly $113,000 a year and the union wants to bump that average up to $170,000 a year. How about if we call for robotics companies to make bids to eliminate half of the workers. At $113,000 per year, we can buy a lot of robots. They don’t fall asleep while driving trains like we saw in Hoboken NJ a few years back which caused many fatalities.
