One of the NNSA’s core missions is to ensure a safe, secure, and reliable nuclear stockpile, key to U.S. strategic deterrence. Components are maintained and modernized through advanced scientific methods. The stockpile reached its lowest since 1960, voluntarily refraining from testing since 1992. The NNSA’s Stockpile Stewardship Program assesses stockpile reliability. The U.S. aims for stockpile sustenance and modernization through surveillance, assessment, and modernization efforts, delivering over 200 modernized weapons to the DoD in 2023. The NNSA also conducts modifications to ensure weapons remain operationally effective and aligned with military requirements.
