May 13, 2025 | Government, International, Security

Effective immediately, the USDA has suspended live cattle, horse, and bison imports through southern U.S. ports of entry due to the spread of New World Screwworm (NWS) in Mexico.

Key actions include:

  • Month-by-month suspension of live animal imports from or through Mexico
  • Enhanced surveillance and sterile insect release
  • Continued U.S.–Mexico collaboration

The goal is to stop NWS advancement, protect U.S. livestock and food supply, and reassess import conditions as containment improves.
