Metro areas in the U.S. experienced a faster population growth between 2023 and 2024, due largely to rising net international migration which offset net domestic outmigration and natural decrease. Approximately 2.7 million of the total population gain in metro areas came from international migration. Of the 387 metro areas, 90% saw growth, with some regions bouncing back from COVID-related declines. The total U.S. population grew by nearly 1.0% to over 340 million people. Notably, growth was significant in large counties and metro areas in the South and West.
