China is poised to become the world’s largest nuclear power producer by 2030. High construction costs have stalled projects in the U.S. and Europe, but China’s state-owned enterprises continue efficiently. China approved building 10 new reactors for 200 billion yuan ($27.7 billion). Plans include eight Hualong One and two CAP1000 reactors, adding 12,000 megawatts of capacity. Construction will occur along the coast in Shandong, Zhejiang, Fujian, Guangdong, and Guangxi. China resumed projects post-2019, with President Xi Jinping promoting nuclear power to reduce air pollution, decrease oil dependence, and meet climate goals.
