Moon-Based GPS Signal Triumph by NASA

Mar 8, 2025 | International, Science, Technology

The Lunar GNSS Receiver Experiment (LuGRE), a collaboration between NASA and the Italian Space Agency, successfully acquired Earth-based navigation signals on the Moon. The LuGRE, delivered by Firefly Aerospace’s Blue Ghost lander, marks the first instance of achieving a navigation fix approximately 225,000 miles away. This accomplishment suggests potential improvements for future exploration missions.

  • LuGRE also broke GNSS records during its journey, indicating its benefits for cislunar space.
  • The mission, a part of NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services, could reduce reliance on human operators using autonomous GNSS signals.
