As of April 7, 2025, NOAA’s GOES-19 satellite has entered operational service as GOES East, replacing GOES-16. Positioned at 75.2 degrees west longitude, GOES-19 monitors the Western Hemisphere, tracking:
- Hurricanes and tropical storms in the Atlantic basin
- Severe weather events
- Atmospheric rivers
- Wildfires
- Volcanic eruptions
The satellite also carries the Compact Coronagraph (CCOR-1) instrument, which images the sun’s outer
atmosphere to detect coronal mass ejections and warn of geomagnetic storms.
