Microsoft has retired Skype, 22 years after its launch, to focus on Microsoft Teams.
Users can migrate automatically to Teams with existing credentials, bringing over chats and contacts.
For those preferring not to transition, Skype data can be exported until January 2026; after that, it will be deleted.
Once acquired by Microsoft in 2011 for $8.5 billion, Skype had around 150 million users. Yet, by 2020, during the pandemic, the user base dwindled to 23 million, partly due to outdated technology for smartphones.
Microsoft Teams, launched in 2017, will now streamline Microsoft’s communication services.
