Smartmatic accuses Fox News of evidence destruction in lawsuit

May 18, 2025 | Elections, Law, Media

Smartmatic, a voting technology company, has accused Fox News of destroying crucial evidence in a $2.7 billion defamation case.

According to court filings unsealed in May 2023, Smartmatic alleges that text messages involving top Fox executives, including founder Rupert Murdoch and his son Lachlan, were intentionally deleted after the 2020 election.

  • The deleted texts date back to November and December 2020.
  • Smartmatic claims Fox News broadcast false claims about election rigging involving Smartmatic’s machines.
  • The deletions are described as “extensive and willful,” impacting evidence preservation.

Rupert Murdoch stepped down as chairman in 2023, succeeded by Lachlan Murdoch.

Lucem News Editor’s Opinion: If destroying evidence means not saving a Slack message from two years ago, we’re all guilty—except maybe Smartmatic, who’s still trying to revive a zombie narrative from 2020. Funny how they trust digital records now after insisting algorithms stole a whole election.
